Oz Ghosts to Win in J24 District Championship |
A re-scheduled event, the District 7 Championship was sailed August 15-16 on Lake Ontario off Oswego, NY. Fourteen boats completed the five race series in weather that was better suited for swimming than sailing. Temps were forecast to be in the 90's and the high pressure system in the area would likely produce light and shifty conditions.
In race one the breeze filled in to 6-8 knots from the southwest. Team Oz used the right side to build a solid lead as Jack Be Nimble was second and John Heretyks's Shockwave rounded out the top three.

Big Waves, Big Win(d) Mark J24 District 7 Event |
The 2008 J-24 District 7 Championship was hosted by Fleet 146 and the Oswego Yacht Club, on Lake Ontario, Aug. 16, 17, 2008. Six races, 4 Saturday and 2 Sunday, were met with big breezes, big waves, great surfing and some seasickness. Competition was close among 18 competing boats, with teams traveling from as far away as Toronto.
This District 7, Championship Regatta, is part of a Four Regatta, “Pennant Series”, with the best of three finishes qualifying a District 7 Skipper, for a J-24 Worlds birth. Regatta Chairman, Tom Doran, who raced and finished fourth, did a great job organizing the event. The on the water PRO, Mike Minchner from the Sodus Bay Yacht Club, and his crew did an excellent job handling the challenging wind and weather conditions, which included consistent 20 knot+ breezes with six foot waves, testing both skippers and crews.
