Rake Hell Celebrates 4th with Firecracker Win

It was a novel race course that approximated a windward-leeward with a strange offset that saw John Enwright and crew on Rake Hell lead a13 boat fleet through Oswego Harbor and out on the Lake for the Second Annual Firecracker Jam. With the starting line squeezed between the docks of the International Marina and the breakwall, the competition was close, friendly well suited for the occasion. About half of the fleet found sailing in the harbor challenging as 5 boats reportedly ran afoul of the sandbars. Following the race a Pot Luck supper was organized by Social Chairperson JoAnn Cucci with City of Oswego fireworks capping the evening.

Enwright takes PHRF Helm

After six years of leading the OYC PHRF Fleet, Dick White has retired to pursue other sailing interests. Always driving the fleet to improve its operations, White built one of the most respected racing programs on Eastern Lake Ontario. Fran Enwright, skipper of Sail A'Vie, has stepped up to lead the fleet. Enwright plans to build on White's success, especially Dick's penchant for communicating with the fleet. The Fleet wishes Dick well in his "retirement" and welcomes Fran to his new position. (7/4/08, dgl)

Summer is upon us, the sailing season is underway and registration forms for the 21st Sail Oswego and the 3rd All J Regatta are now available for download. Take advantage of early registration discounts!

Say it ain 't so...

It could be a long summer in the Port City. Beginning April 1, 2008 and lasting until some time in the fall the Rt 104 bridge will be closed for reconstruction. All traffic will be routed across the Utica Street Bridge with detours returning traffic back to 104. The DOT has produced a detour map. If you are coming from the south you may want to cross the river in Fulton or Minetto to avoid some of the congestion. (dgl, 3/21/08)

OYC Members Launch Book Review Site

OYC members Dave Lochner and Susan Baldacci recently launched a book review site catering to recreational boaters. NauticalReads.com offers brief book reviews of titles of interest to recreational boaters. Links are provided to Amazon.com where the books can be purchased and additional reviews read. Dave noted that there are many book reviews on the web, but they are scattered across many sites. NauticalReads.com will provide a central location where books can easily compared and purchased. Dave and Susan plan to add 2 to 3 reviews a month to the site. (dgl, 1/16/08)

OYC Announces 2008 Regatta Schedule

Commodore Gary recently announced the 2008 OYC Regatta Schedule. Starting the season on the first Saturday in June will be the 9th Annual Oswego County Hospice Cup Regatta on June 6, 2008. The Hospice Cup is a qualifying regatta for the National Hospice Regattas Championship held in Annapolis in May 2009. The 21st sailing of the Sail Oswego Labatts Blue Regatta will be held on July 25-26 concurrently with Oswego Harborfest. Capping off the season will be the 3rd Annual All-J Regatta on August 16-17, 2008. This year's regatta will be part of the J24 District 7 Pennant Series, the series is a qualifier for the 2009 Worlds to be held in Annapolis. More information on the regattas will be posted as it becomes available. (dgl 12/28/07)

Plans are under way for the 9th Annual Oswego County Hospice Regatta scheduled for June 7, 2008. The regatta is a qualifier for the National Hospice Regattas Championship held each spring in Annapolis, MD.

Sail Oswego
Results are posted for the 20th Annual Sail Oswego Labatt Blue Regatta. Forty-three boats sailed in 7 divisions. Mark your calendars for the 21st Annual Sail Oswego Regatta on July 25-26, 2008.

The 3rd Annual All J Regatta has moved to August 16-17. Citing an open August schedule and a full June schedule, organizers moved the date to better accommodate J sailors. The regatta features one design and handicapped racing for J Boats. In past years J24s, J30s, and J29s have competed.

Sail Flow
Popular weather site, Sailflow.com now includes real time weather information from Oswego. Trouble is, they seem to have put Oswego in the middle of the lake!

Real Time Local Weather
After a brief unexplained interruption in service, real time local weather conditions are back online. For a text display of the wind and temperature NOAA's station report. The more familiar graphical presentation of weather data and lake levels is available on the Great Lakes Water Level page.

The Palladium Times Online
Oswego County's news authority, providing accurate and fair news, sports, and features coverage for a historic waterfront community. The Pal-Times regularly publishes articles about OYC and the Oswego Waterfront.

Lake Ontario Racing Forum
Launched in early October, the Lake Ontario Racing Forum is a discussion board dedicated to sailboat racing on Lake Ontario. Still in its developmental stages, the site promises to be a central location for information and discussion about racing on the lake.

Ever wonder what OYC looks like to a passing bird? Wonder no longer, Marinas.com publishes aerial photos from marinas around the world. Get a birds eye view of your next cruising destination.

LYRA Publishes Regatta Schedules
As a service to sailors and member club race organizers, LYRA provides a regatta calendar and participation racking service. Sailors can indicate their intentions early without formally committing to the regatta. This gives race organizers the edge when planning and allows participants to see where the fleets will be to get the best and closest possible competition.
